About The Founder, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais

Dr. Feldenkrais was born in Russia in 1902 and left his home and family at the early age of 12. He became an engineer, earned a Ph.D. in nuclear physics and worked with Nobel Prize Laureate Frederic Joliot-Curie in France. He was an athletic young man who studied self-defense and opened France's first judo club. During World War II, Dr. Feldenkrais lived in England where he served as an officer engaged in anti-submarine research. After the war, he moved back to what had become Israel. Faced with a debilitating knee injury, his life long interest in human learning led him to decline surgery and search for ways to re-educate and heal his body.

As he resolved his knee issues, he expanded his extensive knowledge and confirmed his belief that there is a direct relationship between our body movements and the ways we think, feel, learn and act in the world. To address a wide variety of human movement and functioning, he created an exploratory method that includes over a thousand movement lessons. After his death in 1984, his teachings and ideas have continued to gain acceptance as they have been expanded upon by his dedicated students, who studied with him for over 30 years. Today he is recognized and honored as the founder of the Feldenkrais Method®, which has spawned trainers and practitioners worldwide.

How Does The Feldenkrais Method® Work?

The Feldenkrais Method® is comprised of two learning formats: Functional Integration® and Awareness Through Movement Classes®.

Functional Integration®

Functional Integration® is a one-to-one custom-tailored lesson to address specific individual needs. Through sensitive touch, noninvasive movement and language, the practitioner communicates new ways of feeling and moving to facilitate new patterns of movement and possibilities for expanded awareness and self-expression. The student is fully clothed and either lying on a low firm table, sitting or standing. The lesson is given with extreme gentleness and sensitivity and benefits all ages.

Awareness Through Movement® Classes

Awareness Through Movement® classes are gentle, yet powerful movement explorations to help you tap into your virtually unlimited ability to learn and improve. Areas of your body that may have gradually experienced a loss of mobility — without your awareness — are often sources of discomfort. Restricted movement patterns in these areas can also lead to injury.

Gentle lessons and novel movements restore your awareness. Self discovery and self recognition enable you to regain lost mobility by learning to re-organize your body's movement patterns. This learning approach is far more effective than being corrected by a teacher.

Movement becomes more pleasurable. Expanded awareness leads to increased comfort, improved flexibility, decreased pain, and opportunities for more fulfillment in your life.

How Is This Method Different Than Exercise?

  • Teaches you to be your own self coach
  • Uses explorative movement and touch
  • Enables your nervous system to reprogram itself
  • Takes the will or determination out of learning
  • Emphasizes HOW you do what you do
  • Employs observation and curiosity as paths to self discovery
  • Supports learning and moving with a gentle approach
  • Bypasses resistance by avoiding discomfort
  • Maximizes self-discovery opportunities
  • Teaches connection between movement and your entire self
  • Enables your body to experience movement with minimum resistance (gravity)
  • Examines functional movement in an exploratory and playful manner
  • Stimulates your mind's capacity to restore your body (re-harmonize)

I love Feldenkrais class. For one thing, it is THE place in my life where I go and hear "Do less. Don’t work so hard." Turns out that the learning is right there in the very first part of the movement. Focusing on that first small part can actually make a big difference in the whole.

Feldenkrais has changed the way I work out, the way I walk, sit, drive, even the way I think and feel about some things in my life. I recommend this class to anyone who does any of those things!

Tara, Awareness Through Movement® Client

As a survivor of cancers and heart diseases, I have experienced many therapists. Marsha is the best. Her patience and gentle ways with Feldenkrais are superb!

D.M., Massage Therapist, Reiki Master

Feldenkrais work is, for me, a lifeline. Not only does it open up and relieve the physical body, it wakes up and enables the cellular memory. Feldenkrais work is often called "Awareness Through Movement" and it is just that. You become more aware of your movement and that awareness causes you to become more aware of your entire self. Marsha is truly a natural at Feldenkrais work. She knows the physical aspects of the body inside and out analyzing them appropriately in each Feldenkrais session. She also is deeply in tune with her intuitive side, which is her guiding light, thereby giving the person being worked on a thorough lesson.

M.M., Friend

Marsha has been a huge help teaching the healing movements in the Feldenkrais Method. I have had much success with this program. My favorite part is learning about how making very small adjustments in your sitting or walking has so much to do with being limber and living without all the aches that we all sometimes have. She is very patient and has a healing touch.

My basketball scores got better after individual Feldenkrais work with Marsha. I was more accurate and my back didn't get stiff.

E.G., Athletic Trainer

Your work with Mother has had amazing results. Her use of her legs is really different. She moves them independently of each other (first one and then the other!!!), her legs are relaxed, when she "walks" around in her chair, her whole foot rolls across the floor. She can effortlessly straighten her legs much more than she could after six weeks of traditional therapy. We are very grateful.

Daughter of a 96 Year Old Client

Marsha Robertson, through her extensive knowledge of the Feldenkrais® Method, has helped me understand how to use my body in ways I really didn't know existed. By "borrowing back" (my own term) assistance from other muscles, I have headed off bouts of fibromyalgia, sciatica, and a case of tendonitis so painful I couldn't even wash my face in the morning. Her thorough understanding of her craft and wonderful ability to pass on the information has given me a basis for helping myself out of physical predicaments that would have sidelined both my ability to work and to play. She's changed my life. Thanks, Marsha!
